Morality in the NFL

Written by Taylor Odenat
This past season, the National Football League found themselves in the limelight for the drastic misbehavior of a few notable football players. Of all the misconduct, the players that seemed to strike up the most conversation and commotion were former RB for the Baltimore Ravens, Ray Rice, and former DE of the Carolina Panthers Greg Hardy.
Ray Rice was a promising running back for the Ravens under Coach John Harbaugh and contributed to their Super Bowl XLVII victory over the San Francisco 49ers back in 2012. He pounded his way to 59 yards in the game and the Ravens seemingly were set at QB, RB, and Defensive positions for at least the next few years. Then Ray Rice would commit a career derailing act that he may never get himself out of.
Ray Rice was videotaped knocking out his then fiancee now wife Janay Rice in an elevator and dragging her unconscious body out of aforementioned elevator. The scandal ran on news stations for months and plagued the NFL in the process. Commissioner Roger Goodell methodically sat and contemplated a verdict for Ray Rice ,however, the longer he waited the worse the NFL’s image became. Goodell would proceed to give a punishment that was heavily criticized by fans of the sport and everyday Americans and perceived as too light of a penalty for the crime committed. Goodell gave Rice a two game suspension for his actions which many saw as a slap in the face to the problem at hand: domestic violence. The discipline dropped on Rice wasn't nearly what he deserved for assaulting his (now) wife and didn't show that the NFL really felt that domestic abuse was an extreme issue. The Baltimore Ravens took matters into their own hands and terminated the running backs contract , sending the message that domestic violence is nothing that should be taken lightly; especially not two games suspension light.
Weeks after Ray Rice’s situation dissipated, Greg Hardy’s wrongdoing surfaced making domestic violence a seemingly recurring issue among NFL players. Hardy was accused of grabbing victim Nicole Holder, throwing her to the floor, throwing her into the bathtub, slamming her against a futon, and strangling her. These are all very serious offenses and would rightfully lead to Hardy being suspended for every game but one in this past NFL season. However, prosecution hasn't been able to find Holder and without her testimony they had no case to present. In result, the criminal charges against Hardy have now been dropped. It is assumed that Holder and Hardy came to some sort of settlement causing Holder not to speak on what occurred. Although the charges have been dismissed, Hardy’s domestic abuse case has left a stain on his image and the NFL since he continues to play in this league. Ray Rice hasn't received a call from an NFL team and is still a free agent after his termination and Greg Hardy should be as well. Not even Hardy’s former team felt the NFL needed the distraction of his presence in their organization and in the league as a whole.
The Cowboys, one of the most publicized and scrutinized teams in the league, headed by owner Jerry Jones, brought themselves back in the public eye by signing Greg to a 1-year deal. Before the acquisition, Dallas seen as a team that could make noise in the playoffs and possibly win their division. However, Greg Hardy now single-handedly makes them a Super Bowl contender; but at what price.
While the Baltimore Ravens did the ethical decision of not continuing to use Ray Rice's services, the Cowboys decided to go a different route. Wins equal money and a championship, which are things that Jerry Jones loves. However, the issue of domestic abuse is a subject bigger than football and Greg Hardy’s name on a Cowboy’s roster spot doesn't demonstrate that.

The Buffalo Bills Free Agency Adventure

Written by Taylor Odenat

Seemingly overnight, the Buffalo Bills have gone from a team consistently missing the playoffs, to a team that now has a chance to be a powerhouse in the AFC East. They have grabbed hold of opportunities that have come along in this NFL offseason and don’t seem to show signs of slowing down. Last season, the Bills finished with a 9-7 record and were beginning to improve as a franchise with the ground work of RB CJ Spiller and an unexpectedly productive season from veteran QB Kyle Orton. After a 2-2 record as a starter, QB EJ Manuel was benched which would end up sparking the 7-5 playoff missing end to Buffalo’s season. Buffalo made improvements, but the franchise knew that changes needed to be made.

As with all teams in any sport, when an organization is not doing as well as expected the first person blamed is the coach of said team. Coach Doug Marrone was fired after a season and a half and a 15-17 record as Buffalo’s head coach. In his place, after he had recently been fired by the New York Jets, Rex Ryan was hired to replace Marrone and turn the Buffalo roster into a playoff team. To make his job much easier, Buffalo’s front office decided to take this free agency to make their team one that could compete with the rest of the AFC.

The AFC East all upgraded their rosters with the Jets acquiring Brandon Marshall, the Dolphins acquiring Ndamukong Suh, and the Patriots resigning Devin McCourty, so the Buffalo Bills needed to do something about their lack luster roster. So far, they have been successful in that task by making several beneficial free agent additions. According to CBS Sports, the Bills signed two players out of the NFL Top 100 Free Agents for their 2015-2016 squad. They inked former Miami Dolphin TE Charles Clay, ranked 47th in the top 100 NFL Free Agents and resigned DE Jerry Hughes, ranked 25th among Top 100 Free Agents. Additionally, although they may have lost Spiller to free agency, they gained former Philadelphia Eagle RB Lesean McCoy to take his place. Although they have some quarterback confusion on who is going to start between Matt Cassel, EJ Manuel, and Tyrod Taylor, once that situation is figured out they’ll have plenty of healthy options to throw the ball to. The Bills are now pretty deep AT Wide Receiver with last year’s rookie Sammy Watkins, veteran Percy Harvin, 2013 rookie Robert Woods, and other recent signings like previous Pittsburgh Steeler Justin Brown.

Rex Ryan’s track record in six seasons with the New York Jets, before he got fired, included two trips to the AFC Championship and constant criticism by Jets fans. However, with a fresh start, new players, and new organization, Ryan should be able to prove that he is capable of taking an NFL team to the promise land. His relentless defensive coaching style should translate well with the big bodies such as Pro Bowlers Mario Williams, Kyle Williams, and Marcell Dareus that the Bills have on their defensive end. After this free agency, the Buffalo Bills have the opportunity to go from a team that frequently misses the playoffs, to a team that could compete for a realistic chance to play in the Superbowl.

Reflecting on the Great NBA Players of the 90's

Written by Dylan Hunter Carter
Some of the greatest basketball players of all time came out of the 90’s decade. Now only 10 remain. The remaining 90’s players are Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett, Dirk Nowitzki, Paul Pierce, Vince Carter, Elton Brand, Andre Miller, Shawn Marion, Nazr Mohammed,  and Jason Terry. Each of these players have contributed immensely to the history of the NBA, but unfortunately, most of these players are facing the end of their careers. With the official announcement of Steve Nash’s retirement on early Sunday afternoon. Nash was easily one the greatest point guards of all time and an incredible personality in the NBA. Many fans have taken a step back to reflect on his monumental career and the age of legendary players to come out of the 1990’s.

Three of the greatest power forwards of all time came out of the 90’s and continue to play today. Tim Duncan, Dirk Nowitzki, and Kevin Garnett have each made incredible impacts of the play styles of NBA Big Men. Duncan brought the post game back to its roots, the core fundamentals and some of the craftiest footwork. Totalling 5 Championship victories and 2 MVP’s, Duncan is arguably the greatest Power Forward of all time. Nowitzki, the German sensation, revolutionized the play style of the NBA big man with his incredibly unique style. Between his impeccable 3 point sharpshooting and his unguardable fadeaway, Dirk was the first and best example of shooting big men. Dirk is a one time MVP and a one time Champion. Kevin Garnett capitalized on his incredible post moves and explosive play style. The Big Ticket won one championship and one MVP award. These 3 big men are all argued as the greatest Power Forwards of all time and are all still impactful in the NBA today.

Kobe Bean Bryant is one the greatest NBA players of all time. He’s won 5 Championship trophies and 2 MVP awards. He scored 81 points in 1 game alone. Kobe is not just another player, he’s a legend. There is nothing that Kobe cannot do on the court. Although his later years have been plagued with injury and a crumbling Lakers player core, Kobe is forever a legend and a presence in the NBA. There’s been a lot of talk about his retirement but The Black Mamba is determined to play one more strong season before he retires.

Paul Pierce, Shawn Marion, and Vince Carter have all slowed down as time has gone by, but each player is still effective in the NBA. Pierce still has the ability to perform as a shooter and a clutch scorer for the Washington Wizards after a legacy in Boston and a quick tenure in Brooklyn. Marion is currently with the Cavaliers and continues to be an elite defender. Marion and his unique athletic play style has brought him to a fantastic career with 5 different teams. Vince Carter is a hyper athletic phenomenon whose shooting has increased with time. Carter is widely considered as the greatest dunker of all time, and he’s barely slowed down. While he doesn’t play too often with the Memphis Grizzlies, he makes a huge impact when he does. Carter is a living Highlight Reel.

Varying in age, the stars of the 90’s continue their careers as the stars of today, but not for much longer. With each passing season, we get closer to the retirement of what is one of the greatest decades of basketball that’s ever been played, so make sure to embrace these incredible players for the time we have left. Each and every single one of these players is a spectacle to watch and a testament to what was an incredible era of basketball.

Are the 2014-2015 Knicks another 1996-1997 Spurs?

Written by Taylor Odenat
The New York Knicks have won a total of 14 games in this 2014-2015 season and, at this point, are aiming for the Number One pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. Projected Number One pick of the upcoming draft, Jahlil Okafor, has the chance to be more than a special player. He has the chance to be the franchise stabilizing pick that the 1996-1997 San Antonio Spurs had the chance to acquire when they drafted Tim Duncan in the 1997 Draft.

The 1996-1997 NBA season was not one that the San Antonio Spurs were built to do well in. Once Duncan declared out of Wake Forest, San Antonio wanted to acquire him and multiple factors came into play that allowed this to happen. The Spurs lost David Robinson, who had been their best player without a doubt, to injury that season and were also dealing with the declines of ‘The Admiral’ Avery Johnson and Vinnie Del Negro. Their once dynamic backcourt was now in their early thirties and had lost a step. After decades of being a consistent and winning organization, the Spurs all of a sudden weren't a good team and were well on their way to having a great chance at the Number One pick. Granted, they did finish behind the Celtics and the Grizzlies in losses, but if their intentions were to tank then they were successful.

The 2014-2015 NBA season started off as one that might be semi-prosperous. Phil Jackson recently joined the Knick front office and hired Derek Fisher as the new head coach. Carmelo Anthony just came off an All-Star season where he averaged 27.4 ppg, 3.1 apg, and a (career high) 8.1 rpg. They seemed to have a roster that could contend for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with a team led to Carmelo with a supporting cast of Iman Shumpert, Amare Stoudemire, and J.R. Smith. However, the season for the New York Knicks spiraled out of control and their season went from prosperous to wondering if they will even make the playoffs. Just like the 1996-19967 Spurs, the Knicks season took the biggest hit when they lost their superstar forward Anthony to injury mid season. The Knicks eventually had to face the reality that they weren’t going to be a good team this season; even if Jackson won’t admit it. The tanking seemingly begun with the trade of erratic scorer J.R. Smith and athletic defender Iman Shumpert going to Cleveland and ending with the the buyout of Amare Stoudemire. The Knicks organization had to look forward to the future and put this season behind them. There may still be games that have to be played, but Jackson has bigger plans.

While the pile up of losses for the 1996-1997 San Antonio Spurs led to the acquisition of 21-year-old Tim Duncan, the collection of losses for the New York Knicks may lead to the drafting of 19-year-old Duke freshman Jahlil Okafor. Okafor has a refined, pro-ready body and low post game that will allow him to make an impact from day one of his rookie year. For a 6’10, 273 pound player with a wide body structure, he has impressive footwork and tremendous body control. He’s super comfortable with his back to the basket and is a tenacious rebounder on the offensive end. While Okafor may not be the exact same player as Duncan, they both are versatile players and have effective post games. Okafor could be the New York Knicks version of Tim Duncan to finally bring the Knicks to an elevated spot in a struggling Eastern Conference.

The New York Knicks now have the chance to be the 1996-1997 San Antonio Spurs. With only 14 wins and 11 games left to go, the New York Knicks are set to even attain less victories than the 1996-1997 Spurs(20). Only the ping pong balls know if the New York Knicks will receive the Number One pick in the 2015 Draft, but this season could mean much more than just a pile up of losses; just ask the Spurs.

Is Football Worth the risk?

  Written by Taylor Odenat
After one season, former rookie of the San Francisco 49ers Chris Borland retired from the National Football League at only 24 years of age. The average NFL retirement age is 28 years old, but Borland has decided to hang it up due to concerns about future brain issues. Many football enthusiasts wouldn't have blinked an eye at this announcement if this was about an irrelevant player, bound to be out of the league within a season or two regardless. However, Borland had an impressive season for the 49ers and seemed to have a future in the NFL at the linebacker position. So with this shocking decision, a frequently asked question is resurfaced: Is playing football worth the risk?

Young athletes normally choose between the popular sports they see on the bigger television networks and tend to gravitate to one of three sports: baseball, basketball or football. Now all of these sports can leave with you with a medley of injuries from a rotator cuff tear to a torn ACL; but football is known to be the most dangerous and cause the most health concerns further down the line. Many retired football players are now living with dementia and serious brain issues caused from playing football for a numerous amount of years. As recent as April of last year, Pro Football Hall of Famers Tony Dorsett and Joe DeLamielleure were diagnosed as showing signs of chronic traumatic encephalopathy. This is a deteriorating condition that scientists say is caused by head trauma and related to depression and dementia. Injuries like this are caused by the helmet to helmet contact that takes place in football and the frequent concussions that players get while mid game. Football is a violent and risky sport to play and makes parents everywhere cringe when their son or daughter says they they are interested in playing.

A young athlete should be able to decide for themselves if they want to play football, but with that decision comes possible consequences. Not many NFL players retire unscathed, injuries will happen that will most likely affect the players long term and short term health. However, if the athlete is able to come to terms with that reality then football isn’t a bad sport. It’s the most popular sport in the country so it will always attract new players to its sport. Through training and hard work, people become very skilled football players and should not necessarily let the downfalls affect their decision to play. Some Americans are born with a natural agility, body build, and acceleration that would allow them to participate in contact activity; that is talent that should not be wasted or taken for granted.

Chris Borland is naturally going to spark the minds of many American parents and children on whether or not football is really worth the risk. Is it worth the grind and concussions, or the leg injuries and future health concerns, or the non guaranteed contracts? Theses are all questions that the player must decide for themselves; just like Borland decided that football wasn’t worth it, its up to the youth to decide if it is.

The Return of Big Ben and the Future of the Steelers

Written by Dylan Hunter Carter
On March 15th, it was announced that 2 Time Super Bowl Champion and Steelers franchise quarterback Big Ben Roethlisberger signed a contract extension for 5 years worth $99 million. As the face of the Steelers since he was drafted in 2004, Big Ben has brought a level of elite play and exceptional ability that fits perfectly with the tough and gritty essence of the Steelers. Following a difficult loss to their long time rivals, the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Wild Card game, Big Ben is ready to return to his Steelers with a vengeance.

The Steelers haven’t played their best football in years, but this year was an exceptional difference as opposed to the 2013-2014 season where the team ended with an 8–8 record without making playoffs. This season Big Ben was exceptional, passing for a stellar 4,952 yards; tied for most in the league with Saints quarterback Drew Brees. Standing at 6' 5" and 241 lbs, Big Ben has been using his exceptional size and distinct passing skill to his advantage for his entire career.

Big Ben was not the only Steeler to have an exceptional season. Up and coming Running Back Le’Veon Bell had a stellar season, rushing for 1,361 yards with 8 Touchdowns. Bell is a core piece in the Steelers’ offense. Bell took an unfortunate blow to the knee prior to the Steelers’ AFC Wild Card game, greatly harming the running game of the Steelers. Bell took the league by storm, surprising all spectators to his exceptional season. Marshawn Lynch better look out because sky’s the limit for Bell; he has the capability to become the best running back in the league.

Another Steeler who had an exceptional season is Pro Bowler and elite Wide Receiver Antonio Brown, who totalled 1,698 receiving yards on the season. Brown is 26 years old and is only getting better. He’s been the go to guy for Big Ben and the Steelers offense for years and he continues to dominate the competition.

The re-signing of Roethlisberger is an important factor when thinking about the morale of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Roethlisberger has been the definite leader of the Steelers since he was drafted, so to know that he’ll be returning brings peace to fans and players alike. With their signature gritty play style, the Steelers have potential to bring home another Super Bowl trophy next season. The primary factor hindering that Superbowl Potential is health. We can see the impact that health has had on the Steelers through the injury of Le’Veon Bell. They suffered through that wild card loss largely due to the lack of running game which Bell provides. If the Steelers can stay healthy then they have potential to pull through the regular season and end back up in the Superbowl.

Do you think the Steelers have the potential to make an impact next season?

The Reggie Jackson Experience

Written by Taylor Odenat
Similar to Eric Bledsoe in his previous stint with the Los Angeles Clippers, Reggie Jackson went from energetic spark plug backing up a star point guard, to being a starter himself.  Reggie Jackson drafted with the 24th pick of the 2011 NBA Draft was an under the radar draft pick as a sophomore playing for a solid but unspectacular Boston College team. He wasn’t projected to be an NBA starter, however, he did possess the slashing ability, explosive athleticism, and dynamic first step to make an impact in the the NBA.

In his first season with the Thunder Jackson averaged a lackluster 3.1 ppg  and 1.6 apg on 32% shooting from the field. These were definitely not numbers that compared to the point guards in his class such as Kemba Walker (12.1 ppg, 4.1 apg) and Kyrie Irving (18.5 ppg, 5.4 apg), but Jackson was just getting started. In his next three and a half seasons leading up to the 2014-2015 trading deadline Reggie Jackson gradually increased his scoring numbers, assist averages, and field goal percentage. He was a consistently improving player for the Oklahoma City Thunder and was filled with loads of potential. However, he wanted a shot at showing all that potential but didn’t feel like he had that opportunity with the Thunder. When playing behind the extremely athletic Russell Westbrook, it definitely is a difficult task to attempt at making your way to becoming a starter even when you're playing at such a high level.

With Brandon Jennings out for the season, The Detroit Pistons looked elsewhere to make up for the perennial All Star talent they had lost for the season to injury. Cue Reggie Jackson, explosive, slashing backup guard who felt he was being used as a scapegoat for the losses OKC were taking. He wanted to show he could run a team and has had the opportunity that Eric Bledsoe had when he was traded to the Phoenix Suns. In 12 games with the Detroit Pistons, Reggie Jackson has started every game and averaged 15.0 ppg, 7.8 apg and 4.1 rpg in 31.1 minutes of action per game. His shooting still needs to improve as he only shooting 29% from three, but his slashing, athleticism and playmaking ability are all still existent in Detroit. Reggie Jackson is showing the world what he is capable of and in recent games has been showing it in bunches. On March 17, 2015 Reggie Jackson put on a clinic with a 23 point, career-high 20 assist game leading the Pistons to an upset victory over the Memphis Grizzlies. He became the only player to attain a 20-point 20-assist stat line since Steve Nash finished a game against Suns on November 9, 2009 with 21 points and 20 assists. So its safe to say that although Jackson was utilized as sixth man in Oklahoma City, he has the ability to be much more than that in his young NBA career.

Is Mike Conley a top 10 Point Guard?

Written by Taylor Odenat
Mike Conley, starting point guard for the Memphis Grizzlies, has been constantly overlooked in the discussion of the top point guards of the NBA. Notable names that come to mind are immediately superstar floor general Chris Paul for the Los Angeles Clippers, electrifyingly athletic point guard Russell Westbrook for the Oklahoma City Thunder, and smooth shooter Steph Curry for the Golden State Warriors. Mike Conley is consistently left of that list when it comes to top guards of the NBA.

Conley is considered one of, if not the; most underrated player(s) in the league. He doesn't get the shine he deserves because Memphis isn't his team. For years the Memphis Grizzlies have been a ground-and-pound basketball team led by Zach Randolph and emerging center Marc Gasol. Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph have received recognition with Marc Gasol most recently winning the Defensive Player of the Year Award in 2013 and Zach Randolph expected to rack up nightly double-doubles whenever he steps on the basketball court. However, Mike Conley isn’t noticed for essential contributions to the Memphis Grizzlies and steady yearly improvements as an individual player. Since his rookie season in the 2007-2008 NBA season, Conley has kept around 45% from the field and has continued to make strides for the Grizzlies organization as the remain a winning team throughout the years. In a stacked Western Conference, Conley is the rock for this team and has been for years. The Memphis Grizzlies have a plus or minus of 4.7 when he is on the court and a plus or minus of 2.5 when he isn’t on the floor.

Conley plays with poise that many point guards in the NBA don’t possess. He may not be flashy or super athletic or average a double-double in assists in points, but Conley is the third piece to the puzzle that allows Memphis to be a top powerhouse in the Western Conference. According to Basketball Reference, (Per 36 minutes) Mike Conley is averaging 6.1 apg and 14.7 ppg. These aren’t flashy numbers, but that is due to the fact that doesnt need the flashy numbers to allow the Grizzlies to succeed on a nightly basis. He comes out plays hard defense, makes the right plays, and picks his spots on the floor. In what Conley lacks in athleticism, he makes up for in his strong intellect in the game of basketball.

The Memphis Grizzlies, winners of 47 games, are sitting at the second seed in the West and are poised to clinch a playoff spot. This ball club wouldn’t be at this position without Mike Conley, who is more than capable of heading this team to a championship. He wasn’t projected to be a top 10 point guard in this league, but he plays both ends of the floor  and at times it is difficult to name nine point guards that are truly better all around players than Conley. He deserves respect and recognition and if the Grizzlies make a deep playoff run, he will receive that acknowledgment soon enough.

The Rise and Redemption of Brandon Knight

Written by Dylan Hunter Carter

Phoenix Sun’s All Star snub point guard is having what is easily the best season of his young career. Starting off the season with the Milwaukee Bucks, Knight averaged a stunning 17.8 points, 1.6 Steals, 5.4 assists, and 4.3 rebounds. Knight also unexpectedly led the Bucks to the 6th Seed in the East before the blockbuster trade at the 2015 deadline. Knight was sent to the Phoenix Suns in a three team trade between the Philadelphia 76ers and the Milwaukee Bucks. The Bucks sent Knight to Phoenix in return for rookie Tyler Ennis, Duke alumni Miles Plumlee, and former ROTY Michael Carter-Williams.

Before the trade, Knight was playing at an All Star level alongside teammates Khris Middleton, OJ Mayo, and Giannis Antetokounmpo. Prior to the season, the Bucks were expected to to have an unexceptional season led by the Second Pick in the 2014 Draft, Jabari Parker. Brandon Knight immediately shed this misconception with his elite play. Following the tragic season ending injury to Parker, Knight was seen as the definite core of the Bucks season. The Bucks took the league by surprise and have emerged as one of the elite young teams of the East. With the help of Head Coach Jason Kidd, Knight learned how to take his scoring potential and balance it with his passing ability, size, agility, and pure skill.

On February 19th, 2015, the Bucks organization made what was one of the biggest mistakes of the season. The Bucks traded away Knight in exchange for Michael Carter-Williams. This is not to say that MCW isn’t a great young guard full of potential, he’s just not having as strong of a season as Knight. MCW’s turnover totals this season have been horrendous, totaling 204 turnovers over 50 games compared to Knight’s 187 turnovers in 62 games. More than that, Knight had become the face of the Bucks. Trading him was a blow to the fans who poured their hearts into this young talent who led their team into playoffs contention.

On the Suns, Knight’s stats have been solid, but not as strong as they previously had been. Knight has averaged 14.4 points along with 4.5 assists and 2.1 rebound on his new team. These are still strong numbers, but Knight’s full potential isn’t being fully utilized in the Suns’ two guard system. Unfortunately, Bledsoe is the core talent of the Suns and they’re looking to expand his potential more than focusing on Knight. Knight will without a doubt continue to progress and excel in his growth with the Suns, but not at the same rate as he would’ve with the Bucks.

Knight’s All Star snub this year is just another example of poor luck in his young NBA career. Whether he’s hit with a killer crossover by Kyrie Irving or he’s been stuck in the path of a powerful DeAndre Jordan dunk, he seems to always pick himself back up and try harder. Many people undermine his play because of these events, but he cannot be categorized because of his poor luck. Knight is a stud and an overlooked talent in the league. Over the next few years, Knight has the potential to become an All Star or even more. As a potential MIP, the sky’s the limit for Brandon Knight.

DC's Top 10 NBA Players of All Time

Written by Dylan Hunter Carter
There is only one question that can immediately bring debate amongst basketball fans:
Who would you include in your Top 10 All Time Greatest Players?
This is my personal opinion on the Top 10 Greatest Players of all time, so please understand that this list comes entirely from my perspective and from all time achievements.

10. Hakeem- “The Dream” is a fitting nickname for a player of Olajuwon's caliber. As a 2 Time Champion and a 2 Time Finals MVP, Hakeem was easily the craftiest post player in the NBA’s history. Hakeem is the spitting image of the perfect center. He was a  dominant presence, an incredible rebounder, an exceptional passer, and could score in any way he wanted to. Hakeem could hit his jumpers or shake any defender in the post. While the Dream only took home 1 MVP Award in his 14 year NBA career, Hakeem was the perfect role model for any aspiring NBA big man.

9. Shaq- Arguably the most dominant post player of all time , Shaquille O’Neal revolutionized the way that centers played in the NBA. Shaq created a new era of big men who learned that dominating the paint doesn’t just take skill in the post, but also strength and power. His accolades include 1 MVP award and 4 NBA Championship victories, 3 of which he won Finals MVP for. Shaq’s personality has also been a model for NBA players to come, being one of the most lively personalities in history, but also one of the most intense. Shaq loved to embrace the fun in the game, but also could be the most fierce player on the court. Shaq never ceased to impress.

8. Wilt- Amongst his 4 MVP awards, 2 Championship victories, and 1 Finals MVP victory, there is still only one stat to truly define Wilt’s extraordinary legacy in the NBA: His legendary 100 Point game, a record that will live with the NBA forever. The closest anyone has ever gotten is still 19 Points off from his incredible record. Wilt Chamberlain will live with the NBA through his record forever.

7. Robertson- While he may not be defined by his accolades, being 1 championship victory and 1 MVP award, “The Big O”’s career can be defined by his incredible statistics and individual performance in the NBA. Robertson is the only player in NBA history to average a triple double- Yes, a TRIPLE DOUBLE- for an entire regular season. That is one feat that I don’t think will ever be matched again.

6. Duncan- In terms of the discussion of all time greats, Duncan can be considered the underdog, although he is very deserving. As a 5 Time Champion and 2 Time MVP, Duncan has led the Spurs to victory since he was drafted in 1997. Whether alongside David Robinson or Matt Bonner, Duncan has consistently been the epitome of the Spurs organization and a role model for NBA big men. While consistently overlooked as an all time great, there is no disputing in my mind that he deserves a spot on this list.

5. Bird- There was nothing that Larry Legend couldn’t do. Whether it’s a clutch 3, an extraordinary assist, an impossible rebound, or a defensive miracle, Larry would always without a doubt be there for whatever play was necessary. Bird is also known for having one of the most unique personalities, demeanors, and play styles the NBA has ever seen. He’s led his Boston Celtics to 3 Championship victories, with 2 Finals MVP’s. He also earned himself 2 Regular MVP Awards. Bird is certainly deserving of a spot on this list.

4. Magic- It’s incredible to think that a man who had the height of a Power Forward and the scoring ability of a Shooting Guard built a career as one of the greatest Point Guards of all time. As a 5 time Champion, 3 time Finals MVP, and 3 time MVP, Magic is historically one of the most achieved players of all time. Only two things would’ve improved Magic’s already incredible lifetime legacy:
1. An Extended Playing Career
2. If he had never made his Twitter account.

3. Kareem- The leader of all time MVP selections (6 time MVP) needs to be respected for his historic career and incredible finesse. The man revolutionized the post game with his incredible and innovative post mastery. We’re talking about the man who perfected the sky hook and with it; earned 6 Championships and 2 Finals MVP’s. Kareem built an incredible legacy for himself and revolutionized the game of basketball.

2. Russell- While it can be argued that Bill Russell played in a different era with different competition, there is no dispute in the numbers. 11 Championship victories and 5 MVP trophies are undeniable. Russell and his classic Celtics dominated the league for around a decade. He never won the finals MVP, but that’s because it didn’t exist yet. And by the way, they named the trophy after him. That should say enough.

1. Jordan- When someone refers to “The GOAT”, you always know who they’re talking about. Michael Jordan earned that title for himself through years of effortlessly dominating the competition. Jordan performed at a level of intensity that no other player has ever reached. The competition he faced was some of the best in history, and he still became a 6 Time Champion, 6 Time Finals MVP, and 5 Time League MVP.

And there you have it, the Top 10 Greatest Players of All Time. Keep in Mind that everyone has different perspectives, so don't take any of this to heart. I'm talking to you Kobe and LeBron fans. So now i pose the question to you, who makes up your list for the greatest NBA players of all time?

The Andrew Wiggins-Kevin Love Deal, Who Won the Trade?

Written by Taylor Odenat
In August of 2014, after reuniting superstar talent Lebron James with the Cavaliers, General Manager David Griffin orchestrated a blockbuster trade with the Minnesota TImberwolves and the Philadelphia 76ers trading the 2013 first pick Anthony Bennett and the 2014 first pick Andrew Wiggins to the Timberwolves for All-Star Kevin Love. On paper, this would be an immediate win for the Cleveland Cavaliers and immediately boost their roster for this season and increase their chances of winning the 2014-2015 NBA Championship. In Minnesota, Kevin Love was a nightly double-double machine, stretched the floor, and provided the Timberwolves with a post presence and accurate outlet passing that very few players possessed.  Many Timberwolves fans didn't understand why management would trade Love to the ,already seemingly stacked, Cavaliers while “only” receiving Andrew Wiggins in return. It was a widely regarded notion that Cleveland won this trade and would now have the highest odds to come out of the Eastern Conference. However, this doesn't seem like the case seven months later.

Andrew Wiggins is on his way to winning the Rookie of the Year Award and there isn’t much competition. His only competitor in winning the award would be 24 year-old forward for the Chicago Bulls Nikola Mirotic. He is taking advantage of his opportunities in Chicago with the plethora of injuries to Taj Gibson, Jimmy Butler, and Derrick Rose. Mirotic is receiving minutes and is making the most out of them. However, Andrew Wiggins is still projected to run away with the Rookie of the Year Award. At 19 years-old, Wiggins is averaging 15.7 ppg, 1.9 apg, 4.3 rpg, 1.1 steals on 44% shooting in almost 35 minutes per game. Wiggins already made history being the second player to be drafted as the number one pick, only to be traded afterwards without playing a single game for the team he was originally drafted for. Now, actually playing in the NBA, Andrew Wiggins has a chance to become just the third player to begin the season under 20 years of age and average at least 15 ppg, 4 rpg, and 1 spg at a usage rate higher than 20 percent. The only other two players are: Best Basketball Player in the World Lebron James and New York Knicks All-Star Carmelo Anthony; so Wiggins is already in good company in the start of his career. Also, Andrew Wiggins has defensive potential through the roof; never fearing the challenge of guarding the top shooting guards in the league.

On the other hand, Kevin Love has struggled on a nightly basis to prove he can be a consistent third option to Kyrie Irving and Lebron James. Although Cleveland has worked their way up to the second seed in a struggling Eastern Conference,  Kevin Love has been a non-factor in many Cavalier games as Lebron and Kyrie show why they are superstars in this league. Although the Former Timberwolf is averaging 17.0 ppg, 10.0 rpg, and 2.3 apg, this hasn't been a very Kevin Love type season that we are seeing. Also, Love is a free agent come this offseason and if the Cavaliers don’t win a championship this year, Kevin might take his talents elsewhere. Even possibly the Los Angeles Lakers who have a ton of cap space and can sign at least two marquee free agents. With the Timberwolves, Andrew Wiggins is on a rookie deal so would at least stay in Minnesota until they decide whether or not to pick up his option or to trade him. Not picking up his option and trading him are both unlikely as Wiggins is a future superstar in the making so in the end, the Timberwolves won this deal; especially if Kevin Love doesn’t re-sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers come the 2015 offseason. Kevin Love is the player he is going to be, Andrew Wiggins hasn't even scratched the surface of the star he is bound to develop into.
